The region around Barberton is part of the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known worldwide for its ancient rocks. These mountains contain some of the best-preserved geological formations from the early Earth, dating back roughly 3.6 to 3.2 billion years.
At that time, the planet was a very different place. There were no plants, no animals, and no forests. The air contained little oxygen, and the surface was dominated by volcanoes, shallow seas, and newly forming landmasses.
