The wonderful smell of rain and why we love it

There are few smells that can change the atmosphere of a place quite as quickly as the first rain after a long, dry spell. One moment the air is hot and dusty. The ground is hard beneath your feet and the bushveld seems to be holding its breath. Then the first drops begin to fall. Within minutes, an unmistakable earthy fragrance rises from the ground.

It is a smell that many people instinctively recognise, yet few know exactly where it comes from. That distinctive scent even has a name: petrichor.

For anyone spending time outdoors, whether sitting around a campfire, walking beside a dam or river or simply relaxing under the trees, the smell of rain can become part of the experience. It is one of those natural sensations that seems to stir something deeper than simply appreciating a pleasant fragrance.

So what exactly happens when rain hits dry earth? The answer involves plants, soil, microscopic organisms and a rather clever piece of chemistry.

What is petrichor?

The word petrichor was created in the 1960s by Australian scientists who were investigating the smell associated with rain falling on dry soil. The name comes from Greek roots. “Petra” means stone, while “ichor” was the fluid believed to flow through the veins of the gods in Greek mythology.

Petrichor therefore gives a poetic name to something that is actually the result of several natural processes taking place around us. The smell is not caused by rainwater itself. In fact, pure rain has very little smell. The characteristic fragrance develops when raindrops interact with the ground and release various compounds into the air.

One of the most important contributors is a compound called geosmin. Geosmin is produced by microorganisms found naturally in healthy soil, particularly certain types of bacteria. The compound has a strong earthy odour, and humans are remarkably sensitive to it.

Even very small quantities can be detected by the human nose. That earthy smell after rain is therefore partly the scent of the living soil itself.

During dry periods, plants release oils and other organic compounds into the environment. Some of these compounds accumulate in the soil and on rocks and other surfaces. At the same time, soil microorganisms continue producing compounds such as geosmin. When rain finally arrives, it disturbs this collection of substances.

Raindrops striking porous soil create tiny bubbles. When those bubbles burst, they can propel microscopic particles and volatile compounds upwards into the air. This process is known as an aerosol effect. Those tiny airborne particles carry the earthy compounds towards our noses, creating that unmistakable smell that so many people associate with rain.

It explains why the fragrance can sometimes seem almost instantaneous. The rain does not need to soak deeply into the ground before we notice it. The impact of the drops can release the compounds into the air almost immediately.

Plants also contribute to the smell. During periods without rain, vegetation can release oils that collect on soil and surrounding surfaces. These oils may help plants cope with their environment, but they also become part of the complex mixture of compounds that we smell when rain arrives.

The combination of these plant oils, soil compounds and geosmin creates the distinctive fragrance we recognise as petrichor. The smell can therefore vary considerably from one place to another.

Why does rain smell so powerful to us?

There is another fascinating part of the story. Our sense of smell is closely connected to areas of the brain involved in memory and emotion.

A particular scent can transport us back to a place or moment with astonishing speed. The smell of freshly baked bread might remind someone of a grandmother’s kitchen. The scent of sunscreen can bring back memories of childhood holidays. For many people, the smell of rain does exactly the same thing.

It may remind them of summer holidays, thunderstorms, childhood afternoons spent playing outside, camping trips or the relief of rain after months of dry weather. In a place such as the Lowveld, where hot, dry conditions can make rain feel particularly welcome, the smell can carry an especially strong emotional association.

There is also something deeply satisfying about the change that rain represents. The air cools. Dust settles. Leaves become glossy. Streams begin to flow. The landscape changes colour. Rain announces a transformation, and petrichor is one of the first signs we experience.

Why does rain smell different before and after a storm?

There is actually more than one “rain smell”. Before a storm, some people notice a fresh, sharp or almost metallic scent in the air. This can be associated with ozone, a molecule containing three oxygen atoms.

Ozone can be produced naturally during thunderstorms when electrical activity causes oxygen molecules to break apart and recombine. Wind can then carry the ozone ahead of the approaching rain. This means that the smell of an approaching storm can sometimes arrive before the rain itself.

After the rain begins, the earthy character of petrichor becomes more noticeable as raindrops interact with the soil. The result is a changing olfactory experience: a storm can have its own smell before, during and after the rain.

Not every rainfall produces a dramatic petrichor experience. The intensity of the smell depends on several factors. Dryness is important. After a long dry spell, there may be more accumulated plant oils and soil compounds available to be released.

The type of rain also matters. Light or moderate rain can produce plenty of aerosols as droplets strike the surface. Very heavy rain can behave differently because water begins to saturate the soil rapidly and the release of airborne particles may change.

Wind, temperature, soil type and vegetation all influence what reaches our noses. Even the first rain after a period of drought can smell quite different from an afternoon shower following several days of wet weather.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about petrichor is that it is more than simply a pleasant smell. It tells us something about the environment. It is a reminder that the ground beneath our feet is alive with microscopic activity.

When the first drops fall at OppiDam, the smell rising from the earth is therefore part of a much larger natural process. The dam, the surrounding vegetation, the soil, the rocks and the living organisms beneath the surface all contribute to the experience.

And perhaps that is why the smell of rain feels so powerful. We do not simply smell it. We recognise it.

For some, it means the garden will come alive again. For farmers, it can mean hope for the season ahead. For children, it can mean puddles and muddy adventures. For campers, it can mean pulling the chairs closer together and listening to rain on the tent.

For anyone sitting beside Vygeboom Dam, it may simply mean taking a deep breath and appreciating one of nature’s most familiar perfumes. So the next time the clouds gather over OppiDam and the first drops begin to fall, take a moment before rushing for shelter. Breathe deeply.

That wonderful earthy smell has a name. Petrichor, and it is nature reminding us that, after every dry spell, the rain can change everything.
